Oil Change

Where's a good, inexpensive place to get your oil changed?

Great question. I am due

Great question. I am due for one too and I always just go to Jiffy Lube on Kingsway & Grandview with Entertainment Book coupons, but I can't help the feeling that they are always trying to rip me off.

The free coffee & paper is nice though.

Anyone else have any great deals?

If you're a member of BCAA,

If you're a member of BCAA, you get discounts at the Great Canadian Oil Change. You also get a free paper and I've always had good service. Places like that are always trying to get you to do more while you're there, so beware--it pays to know what your car needs.

what constitutes cheap? I

what constitutes cheap? I phoned Mr. Lube and it's $45! that seems expensive to me...

I just had mine done

I just had mine done yesterday at Jiffy Lube on Kingsway (as mentioned above). For conventional oil it's $33.99, and then in the Entertainment Book there are a few coupons in there for $6 off, if you have or know someone who has one.

I tried Great Canadian Oil

I tried Great Canadian Oil Change . Everything was top notch, and the Oil Change was $28.99!!!!, and they are all 100% Canadian owned too(thats why I go to them), including the oil they use , petro canada!

Just a note but be sure you

Just a note but be sure you know what your getting, for the price. Petro canada oil is recycled used oil. On the Top 50 oil list it rates low on the chart. Most cheap oil change price shop us cheap products ie. recycled oil, fram products (which are not approved by all dealers), also most of these shops don't use orignal products. These shops (ie Mr Lube, Pen 10, Jiffy, etc.) use base transmission fulids and add additives to it to make a fluid like MP4, TIV, Honda, Mecron 5. If your car takes a certin fluid, how can this one additive replace them all? Always remember these shops do not have qualified mechanics they are people like you, most who know nothing about cars.

ex Mr lube manager.

Petro Canada oil isn't

Petro Canada oil isn't recycled, geeze, give me a break. Most auto dealers buy Petro Canada oil and slap their name on it. Why? Its the best oil out there. Go to the PC website. Its all there. Your coment shows me what a manager at Mr. Lube knows. NOTHING!

ex Petro-Canada rep.

Lube Shop Owner Petro oil

Lube Shop Owner

Petro oil is not recycled. We Use Pennzoil and to be honest all major brands have very good oil.
The important thing to remember is that a good quality filter is used Purolator or Wix are the two brands to look for! They make most Oem filters (original equipment for car manufactures).
Do not go to cheap off shore no name brand filters as they just meet specs where puro and wix exeed! As for lube techs, most are properly tranied and are a good source of info for when services are required on your vehicle. Some maybe pushie but are just trying to make it clear what should be done to keep your car in top running condition. Also to keep you warrenty valid.

I was shocked at how

I was shocked at how expensive my oil change was yesterday over $50.00. The parts are less than $17.00 at Lordco...so Mr. Lube, you are a charging way to much...keep the paper and your coffee.

I would take these comments

I would take these comments much more seriously if people could spell properly...

Mr. Lube is the most

Mr. Lube is the most expensive oil change in Vancouver and too pushy!!

Dear Sir I was just at your

Dear Sir
I was just at your business at 1790 Marine Drive in North Vancouver and was very surprised at what I found there. You had NO oil, No oil. What idiots. I have been going there for the past year have spent over one thousand dollars there in one year and you don't have any of my oil there. I drive a ford f150 and it takes 5w20 and your out of oil. I think from now on I will go elsewhere because if they are that stupid there that they can't order oil then I surely don't want these idiots working on my truck. I don't think you'll be in business too long also without oil. You're an oil changing company correct? Anyways good luck and see you later. You may want to pass this along to they but they may not be able to read it. Mike White

I asked my wife to take my

I asked my wife to take my car to great canadian for a lube and oil change,I didnt ask her to get the engine flushed but they forced my wife to have it done,I just had it done 3 months ago.I am going to pay them a visit and ask them why they did this when it was not neccessary, just goes to show that great canadian push the women into getting things done that are not required...NEVER USING GREAT CANADIAN AGAIN

A place you may want to try

A place you may want to try is Lubeworld, they are the next best thing for services compare with Mr Lube. For price, currently they are offering a free membership and you get 10% off all services. Meaning an oil change is just $34.99. They use Valvoline oil, so I'm pretty sure their stuff are pretty good. I've used them 2-3 times now, the cool thing is they have a 42" plasma that shows what is being done to the car. I would suggest any one to try it out.

Lube World is just like

Lube World is just like Great Canadian... They just upsell you everything they can think of and they are small so you never know what will happen if they mess up. The only Quick Lube I would go to is Mr. lube. Not only are they 100% Canadian owned, but they are the largest chain and have a solid reputation/customer service if something goes wrong.

In BC, Lubeworld is now

In BC, Lubeworld is now mainly operated by ex Mr. Lube managers.
Lubeworld and Great Canadian Oil Change are actually part of the same company since Great Canadian is the franchise arm of the company.

Since the managers left in 2006 there has been a huge turnover of qualified employees from Mr. Lube going to Lubeworld and setting up shop there. My friend included. Morale is just horrible at Mr. Lube which probably explains their 1/2 price next oil change promotion. They are definitely hurting and losing customers.

So just be careful where you go. There are some good places around.

And sometimes the dealers are no better. Do you think they actually have certified mechanics who make $100 and hour doing oil changes? Yeah right in your dreams.
Usually the guys who are doing it are former lot boys just moving up the chain.

The one beef I have about Lubeworld though is that their managers drive around in company gas-guzzling emission spewing SUV Hummers. Oil refining and the whole business is bad enough for the environment already but this says alot about their respect for the environment and society.

The reason for managers

The reason for managers leaving Mr.Lube was that Boston pizza bought out Mr.Lube and the only concern they have is high profit returns. The company is now run by Ex- Bell Canada employess who themselves do not know where the oil goes in their cars. Most managers came to Lubeworld beacuse lubeworld offers more growth potential in shorther span of time. Even superceding Mr.Lube.

Watchout at Mr.Lube when you

Watchout at Mr.Lube when you get your services done. 90% of the employees received a huge pay cut and as a result are doing under the table oil change. When paying cash, they make 2 invoives
so part of the payment goes to thier pockets. My friend had a oil change done where the filter came loose but when he went to complain there was no record of his oil change as the employee had voided the invoice and kept the money. He now has to prove that he had a oil change done there or he is out $4500.00 for a new motor. As a result of them being short staffed the trainnig they go through before working on cars is almost zero. You may want to try Lubeworld as most of Mr.Lube's good employess have joined them.

Does anyone have anything

Does anyone have anything NICE to say about a place that does a decent oil change at a reasonable price? I don't think arguing about whose oil is better than whose really gets any where. Now if anyone knows a place or a few that are honest, reasonable and worth it, let me know.

No Frills, Just qulaity and

No Frills, Just qulaity and low price. No appointment. I went there a couple of times and I am super happy with their services and ofcourse their prices for oil change and repair services. Here is their website: http://www.discountautorepairltd.com/index.html

You acutally have to get new

You acutally have to get new radiator cap when you change your fluid.

Why would you think that a

Why would you think that a $80.00 Radiator flush is expensive????
Have you looked at dealership price? They have less experience techs doing the same work and what you paid for a radiator flush you would pay that much just for the labour. Material extra.
Try doing the flush yourself and see how much it cost you? Or if you can even do it.
Plus i belive at Lubeworld you get a 10% discount on your total bill. Try them out.
For reffering a customer to them you also get $10.00 per customer. What better deal do you want.

On May 19th I took my 1991

On May 19th I took my 1991 Aerostar to Mr. Lube to get an oil change. As it had been awhile since I had one the Tech had "strongly" advised me to get an engine flush - telling me it would clean all the sludge out of my engine and it would perform better. I agreed to it and after the oil change I came home and did not drive my van again until the next day when I went out to my mother-in-law's. An hour and a half into the drive my engine starting making loud clunking noises. I had to get it towed back into Calgary to my mechanic who said I had complete engine failure. I had told him about the flush and asked if this could be the cause, since I have never had engine problems before, and he said it most likely was. The co-owner of the garage also told me years ago he had a 1990 vehicle that he had himself done an engine flush on .... one week after the flush the engine completely ceased.

I had to have my van towed to another shop who could put in another engine for me and both mechanics there said it was for sure the engine flush that caused my engine failure. They said that what happens is the "sludge" in the engine that builds up over time becomes loose when this chemical in the flush is released, and the debris then destroys the engine. Had I not had the engine flush.. I would not have needed a new engine. I called Mr. Lube to discuss this problem with them and they advised me that "someone" would call me back but no one ever did. I finally contacted the head office in BC and asked for the names of the owners of Mr. Lube and was given Mr. Jason Guenter. I contacted Mr. Guenter and he first wanted to know why I hadn't called Mr. Lube more than once to report my issue...???? I told him that I never had engine problems before and he was more than welcome to contact my mechanic to verify that. He's now coming up with one excuse after another about why they should not take responsibility. I just want compensation.. with the towing charges, rental of another vehicle, a newer engine and the labour my costs have exceeded $2500.

If you had taken your truck

If you had taken your truck to "your mechanic" in the first place this kind of thing would not have happened. I see this kind of thing all the time. You only get what you pay for. If people insist on looking for cheap auto repair, then they really have no right to complain when things go wrong. Lube techs are NOT licensed mechanics, they did not go to school, or serve a five year apprenticeship to get a lic. So if you want to continue to get your crappy oil changes done at crappy places, I guess I will see you at my shop to properly fix what they screw up ...........Thanks "lube shops" for keeping me busy.

Ok your all bitchin about

Ok your all bitchin about where to go and who's better and blah blah..it's JUST an oil change..whats so complex about taking a bolt out and letting the oil spill out...most of it has to do with a factory-approved oil filter...all places do the same job, no one is better..as long as the oil gets chaged and you have a good filter then who cares. As for the prices, lots of companies base their prices based on their company establishment..Mr Lube is nation wide popular and have a name for themselves so they have higher prices, they know people will go there and people do go there because they know they are a well established place to go.
As for the type of oil, i would only use big names such as Castrol or Quaker State because atleast they have done tests to support their oil, unlike petro canada brand junk, that's just oil made to be sold at the gas station for a quick "top up" until the next oil change...And remember, Mr Lube is warranty approved for new vehicles.

Yes upsell is thier mantra I

Yes upsell is thier mantra I went in for the $29.99 special they tried to sell me expensive filters but also the $29.95 turned into $44.05 because they say they used a different oil well thats fine but at least tell me before you go ahead, not to mention the bogus shop supply fee what a ripoff. Then just try and talk to head office, no reply then try e-mail, no reply now that is what I call service Ha Not

Midas in Richmond was

Midas in Richmond was actually very good. I brought my pontiac wave there today for the first time and the oil change service was excellent. They didnt try to sell us anything, or want us to do more. Just simply did the oil change nice and clean. The total cost was $24.95+tax as it was on special. I also asked them to look at the brakes. They did and even did some work without charging extra. A bunch of nice and honest guys!! Will definitely bring my car back for all the maintenance. Much better than my GM dueck dealership, that's for sure!!!
Highly recommended!!!

I had an oil change at the

I had an oil change at the Great Canadian Oil Change, I drive a 1973 Beetle and they charged me all together, $68.00 tax included. They did nothing except add three litres of oil,no oil filter, there was no check, not that I wanted it, but it does seem to be included on the invoice I was given. I think it was probably the easiest oil change they did all day, and that's what they charged me. Beware.

don't go to jiffy lube on

don't go to jiffy lube on kingsway, they are bunch of crooks. they basically service our company cars. i've heard and saw how they rip off their costumers. once in a while one guy will try it on me. i was there last week and they force an engine flush and injector cleaning on a 2008 GM envoy.
by the way the lady driver told me that it was her 3rd oil change.
company car they can do it. my own car no way the'll gonna do it.

GREAT CANADIAN OIL CHANGE

GREAT CANADIAN OIL CHANGE in Chilliwack

When my car got inside i advised the service person to drain the oil properly or else some remaining oil will contaminate the new oil... he agreed.
After the oil change the service person presented a sample on dipstick and it was brownish and contaminated with old oil, not even close to clean oil.
I mentioned that the time to drain oil was to short, not even 5 minutes, and reminded him that i was asking for proper drainage of old oil .
I WAS informed that oil is fine and no redress will be offered.( violating second point of Guarantee saying that "visiting any of our stores will be a consistently polite, courteous and friendly experience" believe me nothing like that happened. .
MANAGMENT explained quickly that this is a 10 minute oil change and no one has time to drain oil longer that just few minutes and FOR better service I NEED TO GO somewhere else
At this point I WAS INFORMED TO pay or they will seize my car as assurance of payment.
That of course not even close to GCOCH guarantee saying " That when visiting our facilities you will receive thorough high quality service. That we will work hard to exceed your expectations "
The facility violated the guarantee of Franchise in many ways, and does absolutely not stand steadfast to philosophy of Price and Quality Leadership.

Just a few minutes more of drainage will prevent the problem.

I expect from Great Canadian Oil Change to hold down to there policies and Guarantee.

Next time I better do it myself....

You do realize that even if

You do realize that even if you let your oil drain for an hour your not going to get 100% of your old oil out, and if you get an oil change and the oil is still "looking" dirty well sorry but your the one at fault bud, why let it get so dirty in the first place? I'm glad I don't have to deal with you as a customer, and wish you could deal with customers such as yourself on a day to day basis. If you want to vent do not do it on the poor kid changing your oil all he is doing is his job and to put food in his mouth.

My wife went to Lube World

My wife went to Lube World on 132nd Street Surrey and they charged her for an oil change and guess what. The filter was never changed as when I went to get a subsequent oil change the technician said that the filter on my truck was not one from Lube World but Jiffy Lube. They also forgot to put the oil cap back resulting in 80% of the oil vapuorizing and splashin out. My engine is now all dirty and there is a noise coming from the engine. To my astonishment, Lube World is refusing to pay for an engine test even though the filter proves that they screwed up. Now I am wondering if they even changed the oil. Now looking at taking them to small claims court.
